Kohler Cimarron – Best Toilet for DIY Experts Looking to Self-install their New System
History of the Brand
Kohler has a long history, initially founded in the USA back in 1873. With over a hundred years of experience, Kohler brings an unrivalled quality to the market.
Today, it’s one of the most popular household brands in the US when it comes to what goes in our bathrooms. What’s great about Kohler is they take they pay a lot of attention to their sustainability, with an overall aim of improving the quality of life of their customers.
As we mentioned, there is a lot of choice on the market, but perhaps one of the better-known models offered by Kohler is the Cimarron.
Today, we’re putting the Cimarron through its paces, helping you to decide whether this model is really worth buying or not.
Design
First up, the Cimarron is a two-piece model.
Many customers prefer one-piece models, but two-piece systems have their advantages.
Two pieces are much easier to install. If you’re particularly handy within the home and fancy taking on the installation yourself, then having two parts makes the whole process much more straightforward.
If you can imagine trying to install a single toilet, complete with the bowl and tank, in one go, you’ll understand why the two-piece design is much more manageable.
Kohler has always put user comfort as one of their top priorities when designing their bathroom fixtures.
Kohler has constructed the Cimarron at a ‘comfort height’. To put it simply, this means that it’s a whole lot more comfortable to sit on and use. At a comfortable height, similar to that of a dining room chair, you’ll find the process of sitting down and standing up, that much easier.
On top of the height advantage, the Cimarron comes with an elongated bowl. The longer bowl once again makes it a lot more comfortable to use, but it also makes the actual bowl itself more narrow in form. This makes it especially useful in smaller bathrooms.

Materials
One thing that makes your life that much easier, especially in a bathroom situation, is having an easy to clean toilet.
The Cimarron is glazed with vitreous china, a protective coating which protects and hardens the softer material below. Now only does this work to protect the surface of the toilet, but also helps with the cleaning.
The flush on this toilet is made from sturdy polished chrome. This real classy addition is ideal for contemporary bathrooms.
Aesthetics
There is no doubt about it that the Cimarron is a classy toilet. The modern yet timeless design looks great in any bathroom, whether contemporary or more classically styled.
Colors
We are always impressed at the number of colours Kohler offer when it comes to their fixtures.
Much like other models in the Kohler range, Cimarron comes in an impressive seven different choices.
White is the most popular choice of colour for new toilets. However, if you’re going for a slightly different or unusual aesthetic, the sheer number of colours available means you’re bound to find something to suit your tastes.
Check out each of the colours offered, and where we think they may work best.
-
- White White goes well in every bathroom, contemporary or traditional, making it the most common and choice for many. White bathrooms are much easier to sell than other colours, so keep this in mind if you don’t plan to spend forever in your current home.
- Biscuit Suited to a more ‘country chic’ vibe, biscuit is a creamy colour with a hint of yellow, creating a warmer feel than traditional white.
- Almond Inspired by the beach, almond works to provide an earthy and natural aesthetic to your bathroom.
- Dune A relatively balanced and light colour, it fits well in a brighter setting and is an attractive substitute to white.
- Ice Grey Ice Grey is a calming, comfortable, and relaxed shade.
- Sandbar Another colour inspired by the beach, we think this works well paired with slate, ceramic and wood.
- Black Black Not the easiest colour to pull off, but if it’s implemented correctly, it can look stunning.
Flush
The Cimarron uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush. If water consumption is a particular concern, check out our reviews for other Kohler models (such as the Santa Rosa), which are more efficient when it comes to water usage.
All Kohler models come fitted with the patented aqua piston, which allows water to enter the bowl from 360 degrees. Not only is this an efficient way of flushing your toilet, but also works at the same time to clean your toilet with every flush.
Maintenance and Cleaning
As we mentioned above, the Cimarron is a two-piece model.
For cleaning, that means things are a little bit trickier, as the join between the toilet and bowl makes it easier for dust, dirt and grime to become trapped.
The powerful flush on the Cimarron makes light work of solid waste, so you shouldn’t notice any stains or build-up of grime.
Water Efficiency
As we have already discussed, the Cimarron uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush. This makes it a reasonably average performer in terms of efficiency.
The benefit in not cutting back on the flush capacity is that it can offer more powerful disposal, but this is definitely one of the drawbacks of the Cimarron.
Ease of Installation
Many fans of the Cimarron praise it for its ease of installation, and we agree!
The instructions that come with the system are incredibly detailed and provided you take the time to read them carefully, you shouldn’t have an issue installing this system yourself.
You shouldn’t have any issue with manoeuvrability, as the two-piece design can easily be installed separately. We would always recommend asking someone to be on hand to help, particularly with the heavy lifting.
Durability
When you buy a Kohler toilet, you can be reassured you are purchasing something that has been made with due care and attention. Kohler toilets are built well enough to last decades, so making an investment now is bound to pay off in years to come.
As Kohler is such a well-renowned brand, should anything need replacing, you shouldn’t have any issue finding parts on Amazon, or at your local bathroom retailer.
Warranty
Kohler systems come with a limited, one year warranty. While this should be more than sufficient, some companies do offer longer warranty periods.
Price
Depending on your preferred choice of colour, the Cimarron will cost upwards of $350.
Summary
When choosing your new toilet, take the time to think about your ‘needs’ versus your ‘wants’.
With the Kohler Cimarron, you are getting an industry-leading toilet at a very reasonable price. The style is incredibly versatile meaning it will sit nicely in any bathroom.
We give this a 3/5 star rating, with the only major downside being its water consumption.
